Moving Abroad: Thriving Together

Nurturing Relationships After Moving Abroad

Moving abroad together is an exciting and transformative experience. It can strengthen your bond as a couple as you navigate new cultures, languages, and ways of life. However, adapting to a new environment can also introduce unique challenges that require patience, understanding, and effort.

1. Communication is Key

You may have different roles and responsibilities in your new country than in your home country. For example, one of you may have a job while the other doesn't, or one of you may speak the language better than the other. These changes may affect your sense of self-worth, confidence, or independence. They may also create imbalances or conflicts in your relationship .

One of the crucial elements to maintaining a healthy relationship is effective communication. Moving to a new country exposes you to different communication styles and potential language barriers. It's important to openly discuss your expectations, desires, and concerns with your partner to ensure you're on the same page. Be patient and understanding, as both of you may experience periods of adjustment and homesickness.

2. Embrace Cultural Differences

Moving abroad offers an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture. Embrace and appreciate the differences you encounter. You and your partner may have different cultural backgrounds, values, beliefs, or customs that may cause misunderstandings, conflicts, or disagreements. You may also face different expectations, norms, or pressures from your new society or community that may affect your relationship.

Share experiences, traditions, and cuisines from your home country while being open to exploring and learning from the local culture. Embracing these differences together can foster a sense of shared exploration and curiosity.

3. Set Goals and Make Plans

Create a shared vision for your life abroad. Discuss your long-term aspirations, whether it's career growth, travel plans, or starting a family. Setting goals will help you stay focused and committed, even during challenging times. Make plans together, such as exploring nearby towns, learning the language, or trying new activities.

By actively participating in creating a fulfilling life as a couple, you'll strengthen your bond.

4. Build a Support System

Moving to a foreign country can sometimes feel isolating, especially without a strong support system.

You and your partner may feel lonely and isolated in your new country, especially if you don't have any friends, family, or support network there. You may also feel disconnected from your home country and your old contacts. You may rely too much on each other for emotional support, or feel neglected or abandoned by each other. Encourage each other to build new friendships and networks, both individually and as a couple. Engage with the local community, join clubs or social groups, and attend events together. Having a support system will not only alleviate any feelings of loneliness but also provide a sense of belonging and support during your new adventure.

5. Prioritize Self-Care

You and your partner may experience a lot of stress and anxiety in your new country due to the changes and challenges you face. You may have to deal with visa issues, housing problems, financial difficulties, health risks, or safety concerns. You may also have to cope with culture shock, homesickness, or identity crisis .

Taking care of oneself is crucial for maintaining a healthy relationship. Moving abroad is stressful, and it's important to prioritize self-care for both your physical and mental well-being. Encourage each other to engage in activities that bring joy, whether it's exercising, practicing mindfulness, pursuing hobbies, or taking time for relaxation.

By prioritizing self-care, you'll have the energy and positive mindset needed to nurture your relationship.

6. Stay Connected

Technology has made it easier than ever to stay connected with loved ones back home. Schedule regular video chats or phone calls with family and friends to maintain those important connections. Share your experiences and challenges, and seek advice or support when needed. At the same time, be mindful of striking a balance between staying connected with home and fully immersing yourself in your new environment.
